WHERE'S THE AMBULANCE?

Please read the post below from Britton Jones for Nederland City Council.
Level Zero is NOT what the people of Nederland want. It means that the private sector ambulance companies like Acadian Ambulance are busy with "transfers" (transporting people from homes or nursing homes to hospitals and back, especially Medicare patients) instead of waiting for 911 calls. Private ambulance companies generally LOSE MONEY waiting for 911 calls.
If we had an EMS service as part of the Nederland Fire Department, 911 response would be a public service instead of a sideline service for a private company who loses money waiting for bad things to happen.
I am NOT blaming Acadian; I am letting you know the truth of their general financial losses waiting for 911 calls.
Jeff Ortiz, Britton Jones, and I would study the issue and negotiate any proposed changes with Nederland Professional Firefighters Local 3399 before implementing them.
“Level Zero.” It’s an EMS term that is becoming all too common in Nederland. What does that mean you ask? It means there are zero ambulances available to respond, after a call for help goes out, within the City of Nederland.
As an EMS professional in my career I have learned one very important concept: The closest thing we have to creating a life is saving one.
Jeff Darby for Nederland Mayor, Jeff Ortiz for Nederland City Council, and I are interested in studying this issue to see if the City of Nederland could provide ambulance services out of our very own, and amazing, Nederland Fire Department. They are the professionals that know how to get the job done.
The bottom line is that third party ambulance services (which we have now) often lose money, and focus, on 911 service as they make their “big bucks” transferring Medicare/Medicaid patients to and from nursing homes and hospitals, etc.
This can result in lackluster 911 ambulance services. More to come.
